Day Five

My stay at this station was reaching a full week, and I had yet to see Casey leave the lab. So it was jarring to see him so animated as he cleared off his workbench.

"Finished with work?" I asked as I stepped out of the sleep room, yawning and stretching my aching back, pretending all the silent hours from the previous day hadn't caused me one big migraine.

"Just sent the files. I'm ready to burn that fold-out bed."

I half-smiled, glad I wasn't the only one tortured by it. "Glad that's over, huh?"

Casey paused in the middle of wiping his chair of crumbs. "What are we going to do about you?"

"Me? Maybe back on my ship?"

"Not until I get clearance."

I rubbed my temples, not sure what else there was to be done. "So are you putting me back in the cage?"

Casey stared at me, something ticked off in his expression. "No."

His response was so final I didn't argue when he took my hand, pulling me back to the sleeping room. He grabbed things and shoved them in a bag, instructed me to load up my satchel. I did so, and he inspected the metal restraints around my neck, wrists, and ankles. He didn't seem pleased by them, but he didn't say anything. Instead he brought me back to his workbench, opened a drawer, and removed a syringe, ripping it from its sterile plastic casing.

Casey popped the syringe into a tiny glass bottle, drawing out the clear liquid. I didn't have the nerve to protest as he lifted the sleeve of my coat and swabbed it with disinfectant. He injected me with whatever this stuff was and applied a bandage, nodding his approval.

He took my hand again, and we started for the exit, a big door with steel rods locking it in place.

"Where are we going?" I asked, my heart racing.

He input a key code that had the door whirring open. "Would you like a shower?" he asked, his tone giving no indication of his intentions.

"Yes?" I still wasn't sure what any of this meant.

But it was my first time beyond the lab, and a part of me was a little excited to explore. We crossed the empty corridor, heading through a passage of bright, luminescent lights and concave white walls. At the end of it was another set of doors, smaller and less obstructed. Casey pressed a button and I realized it was an elevator. We entered, and Casey put in a combination code for the doors to close before we were sent downwards.

"They'll probably get mad I'm taking you with me, but it's been a long few days. You must be as tired as I am."

Still I said nothing.

We went through a labyrinth of hallways, bustling with more of his kind, all of them sneering in my direction, some more discreetly than others. Casey wasn't perturbed by their actions in the least, gliding along like he owned the place. No, he did own the place.

By the time we stopped at a door, I was certain we'd crossed the entire station.
